“I KNOW Your Works”

In examining the church of Laodicea from Revelation 3, we discover a sobering truth about spiritual complacency that speaks directly to our modern experience. This wealthy, self-sufficient church believed it had everything it needed, yet Jesus declared them wretched, miserable, poor, blind, and naked. The greatest danger we face isn't persecution or obvious sin—it's prosperity that leads us to trust the blessing rather than the Blesser. When we have material abundance, comfortable lives, and apparent success, we can drift into a lukewarm faith without even realizing it. The misunderstood passage about being hot or cold reveals something profound: Laodicea sat between Colossae's refreshing cold springs and Hierapolis's healing hot springs, receiving only lukewarm water that made people sick. Jesus wasn't demanding we be either zealous or completely cold-hearted; He was calling the church to be either refreshing like cold water or healing like hot water—but never useless and nauseating like lukewarm water. This challenges us to examine whether our churches and lives offer genuine spiritual refreshment and healing to a hurting world, or whether we've become so distant from the Source that we've lost our effectiveness entirely.
