“Then Came Amalek”
What happens when we finally reach that place of rest we have been longing for, only to find a new battle waiting on the other side? In Exodus 17, the children of Israel arrive at Rephidim, a name that literally means a place of rest, only to face the attacking Amalekites. This passage opens up a profound truth we all need to hear: joy killers will always show up. The Amalekites represent every force that steals our peace, our confidence, and our sense of God's presence. Depression, anxiety, old habits, financial pressure, relational strain, they come in waves, and just when we think we have finally turned a corner, then came Amalek. But here is what makes this story so powerful. God had been directing Israel's steps the entire time, from Egypt through the wilderness, every single stop was according to His commandment. That means God was never surprised. He knew Amalek was coming. And He knows what is coming for us too. Rather than living in defeat, we are invited to recognize the pattern, name the joy killers in our lives, and stand firm in the truth that God is already in the battle with us. The joy of the Lord is not a feeling that depends on our circumstances. It is a strength that holds us even when Amalek shows up at the worst possible moment.
