“The Poor Of Spirit”

Mar 8, 2026    Rev Earl Dunn

What does it truly mean to be blessed? This powerful exploration of Jesus' first sermon—the Sermon on the Mount—invites us to reconsider everything we think we know about happiness. Beginning with Matthew 5, we encounter nine beatitudes that turn worldly wisdom completely upside down. The message centers on that first, foundational beatitude: 'Blessed are the poor in spirit, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.' This isn't about financial poverty, but about spiritual poverty—a recognition of our absolute emptiness apart from God. The Greek word for 'poor' here describes someone who must beg, like Bartimaeus crying out for mercy or Lazarus waiting for crumbs. It's a posture of complete dependence. We live in a culture obsessed with the pursuit of happiness through possessions, achievements, and experiences, yet these leave us perpetually unsatisfied. Being poor in spirit means recognizing that God's ways differ radically from the world's ways, that we are empty without Him, and that true joy comes from reaching out to others in love, responding with gratitude, and finding our highest fulfillment in serving rather than being served. This isn't just a message for seekers—it's a challenge to all believers who may have become bitter or joyless. The ladder to lasting happiness begins with humility, with beating our chest and crying out, 'God, have mercy on me.' Only when we acknowledge our spiritual bankruptcy can we receive the joy unspeakable that circumstances cannot steal.
