FREEDOM FELLOWSHIP MISSIONARY BAPTIST CHURCH

“What About Church?” Part 2

What is the church really supposed to be doing? In a world filled with prosperity gospels, liberation theology, and social-feel-good messages, we need to return to the clear command Jesus gave His disciples in Matthew 28:19-20. This isn't a suggestion or a nice idea—it's an imperative command, spoken with the same authority as a parent telling a child to clean their room or a boss giving work assignments. Jesus told us to GO, to teach all nations, to baptize believers, and to train them in everything He commanded. The church isn't primarily about making us wealthy, creating social change, or simply making people feel comfortable in their sin. It's about spreading the gospel of Jesus Christ—the good news that He saves us from sin and its consequences. We see this mission lived out powerfully in Acts 2, when Peter's first sermon on the day of Pentecost didn't affirm people or tell them they were fine as they were. Instead, he called them to repent, to turn completely around from their sin, and to be baptized for the remission of sins. Three thousand people responded that day, and they immediately formed a community—learning doctrine together, fellowshipping, breaking bread, and praying. They didn't become lone-ranger Christians. The church is Jesus' idea, His plan for believers to grow together, encourage one another, and fulfill the Great Commission as a body. When we understand how deadly and separating sin truly is, we grasp why this mission matters so urgently.
