“How To Be Joyful”

Jul 19, 2026    Pastor Earl Dunn

This powerful message takes us deep into the book of Philippians, often called the 'joy book,' to explore a fundamental truth: joy and happiness are not the same thing. While happiness depends on happenings and circumstances that come and go like waves, joy is a deep-rooted confidence anchored in Jesus Christ himself. The central command from Philippians 4:4—'Rejoice in the Lord always, and again I say rejoice'—isn't merely a suggestion but a divine instruction for how we navigate life's storms. What makes this teaching particularly compelling is the context: Paul wrote these words from prison, demonstrating that joy transcends our circumstances. The message unpacks joy as a gift from God, given through the Holy Spirit, received through God's Word, and sustained by setting our hope in future glory. Unlike the fleeting satisfaction of a new car or vacation, this joy remains constant because it's rooted not in what happens to us but in who lives within us. We're challenged to understand that joy is a choice we make daily, a flag that waves over our hearts declaring that all is well, even when everything around us suggests otherwise.
