“Time To Work”

Sep 6, 2026    Pastor Earl Dunn

What does it truly mean to serve, and what stands in the way of our doing it well? Drawing from John 13, where Jesus sets aside his outer garments, takes up a towel, and washes the feet of his disciples, we are confronted with one of the most powerful farewell images in all of Scripture. This was not the work of a king or a teacher by any cultural standard of the day -- it was the work of the lowest servant. Yet here is the master of all, on his knees, doing exactly that. The message is unmistakable: greatness in the kingdom of God is measured not by position but by posture. Jesus punctuates this moment with a striking promise in verse 17 -- that if we know these things and actually do them, we will be happy. Not just informed. Not just inspired. Happy. That small word 'if' carries enormous weight. Knowing is not enough. Doing is where the transformation lives. We are challenged to ask ourselves honestly whether we have settled into a comfortable knowledge of the gospel without allowing it to move our hands and feet into action. The supper had ended, and Jesus rose. That rising is an invitation for us to rise as well.
